This is a collection of links I stumbled across and found worth sharing. Also see the blogroll for links to blogs I regularly read.
Via Nicholas Danes I came across the video of Arun Maini (Mrwhosetheboss): “I’m worried about humanity’s future”. In this he addresses some good aspects. It’s about the impact of technology on our lives, society and behaviour. For example, he talks about the fact that algorithms are increasingly trying to keep us in front of the screen for as long as possible, that echo chambers are creating more and more negativity, and that we may soon no longer be able to distinguish between fiction and reality because of AI.

Yey, I’m not the only person who is happy to quit using Twitter. The Verge executive editor T.C. Sottek left Twitter as well.

I always find it interesting to learn how well-known services work under the hood and what efforts are being done behind the scenes to solve performance or other productive issues.

It’s already been a while, but I once (successfully) ran my own mail server for some time. I did this using the open source Mailcow project, which does all the configuration work for you and wraps everything nicely in Docker containers. There are also a few posts about it here on the blog.

I am currently in the process of writing my bachelor thesis and my goal is to finish it as soon as possible. What I sometimes have problems with is distraction. If I don’t immediately enjoy a task, but have to overcome myself, then I get easily distracted. “Just check out something else for a minute…”

Yesterday, I watched this interview from Federico Razzoli with the creator of SQLite Richard Hipp. I learned some more background facts about SQLite or understood things I wasn’t so sure about before.

I don’t like Twitter and I’m a fan of Nitter as an alternative frontend. Whenever there’s a link to Twitter, I use Nitter to read it. Especially the mobile web version of Twitter is terrible, even more with a slow network connection. Not to mention the bad user experience when reading threads. Nitter gives a much better experience because it’s lightweight and fast.

Shane Wighton from the YouTube channel “Stuff Made Here” built a robot that cuts his hair. It worked OK for part of his hair, but see yourself… I wonder how one could even come up with such an idea to have one’s hair cut by a robot with scissors? Crazy!

Social engineering is more like hacking people instead of hacking systems. Still, Twitter has been hacked:

During the apprenticeship our instructor always wanted us to practice 10-finger typing together. A good idea, because I believe that if you really master this skill, you can put the words (or the code) you think about on the screen with an incredible speed. We used to do this with the program “TIPP10”, which is available both as an offline and an online version.
