Is Life Fair?

⚠️ This entry is already over one year old. It may no longer be up to date. Opinions may have changed. When I wrote this post, I was only 18 years old!

And the unique opportunity to value it

There are people who live until they are over 100 years old. They live a happy life, in which there are rarely any particular lows, they never have the problem of having to worry about financial or physical security, they have children who are doing well and only leave the world’s light when they have already received a pension for decades.

But for others, things are quite different. They may be living in poverty and have to ask themselves every day what tomorrow will be, what they can do to satisfy the hunger in their stomach the next day, whether they still exist, or whether they may have been killed by the cold because they could not afford to rent a heated apartment.

Or maybe they are doing quite well until some higher power suddenly decides that the whole thing can’t go on like this, that the plans made by these people have to be thwarted and that their whole life has to be piled up, for example by pulling a member out of the family.

Life is unfair. It will remain unfair. If you are in such a situation yourself, you might wonder why it can’t simply happen to someone who deserves it. Someone who isn’t happy about being alive and in the world anyway? Someone who tramples his life underfoot and, day after day, takes care of it with an extremely unhealthy way of life so that it will end a little earlier?

In fact, we have no choice but to take extra care to ensure that we live healthy lives and thus at least reduce the risk of it hitting us due to our bad behaviour. And of course, that we appreciate being allowed to live, that we are happy about every hour, minute or even second that we can spend with our family. That we consider every sunrise and sunset as a gift.

Because one day we’ll realize we only had one chance.
