Just a small comparison to show that many websites are completely obese: My bachelor thesis in PDF format (which I handed in yesterday) has a size of 1.4 MB. It contains several images and 85 pages of text. With a high information density, this is a much smaller size than most websites have. And it would have been probably also possible to compress or optimize the PDF further.

affficionado A comment by affficionado But let's agree PDFs are terrible for sharing any kind of research. They're static, difficult to parse whilst preserving document structure, unreadable on vertical screens (especially two-column format), and generally don't look good anywhere apart from actual paper. On the other hand, HTML with a bit of CSS (and JS for tiny moving parts such as sliders, plots etc) serves better then PDF in terms of assisting to comprehend your work for anyone who want it.
