Thoughts of an IT expert

London is on a whole different scale when it comes to size. It has roughly the same population as Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt combined, and those cities are already quite large. 🤯

I can’t quite recall it being this enormous when I visited briefly during a language learning trip some years ago.

From The Shard, everything appears so tiny, it almost gives the impression of being fake.

Since I found a cheap lifetime license for AdGuard Premium, I’ll try it on my phone for a while. I’ve also configured it with my strict NextDNS profile. But now my phone not only filters DNS requests to block ads, but also HTTP requests. And while uBlock Origin works pretty well in Firefox on Android, I decided to disable it while using AdGuard to see how the performance compares.

The stats are at least impressive. In half an hour of use today, it tells me that it blocked more than 500 ads or trackers and saved me about 17 MB of traffic.

I use Firefox as my preferred web browser both on PCs and my phone. One extension is always installed: uBlock Origin. The web is so much nicer with all the ads and tracking removed. But today I also retried an extension that will probably join the “must install” list: DarkReader. Especially when I’m browsing the web on my phone in the early morning, I don’t like to be blinded by white websites. Since March DarkReader has finally an option to detect if a website already has a dark theme and only apply it’s color changes to those who haven’t.

Now consumer “security” software is mining cryptocurrency!

If the earth is already in a deep climate crisis, let’s destroy it even faster by using hundreds of millions of computers to print “money”…

Why again do I actually pay attention to efficiency when programming?

Sometimes the problem with programming is that you can’t turn off your mind as easily as you can turn off your PC. Practically, you don’t program anymore. But the brain still continues to program.

My blog is now faster

Published on in 💬 Micro

Yesterday and today I worked very hard on making my blog faster. In the Google Search Console I saw that my blog suddenly gets half as many clicks since a few days and that my pages are only “moderately” fast. I don’t really care about the number of clicks, but I do want the site to be fast. PageSpeed Insights also showed me that the time until the “First Contentful Paint” seems to be longer than a second for many users (and it has to be under a second for it to be considered fast).

I have taken the following measures:

  • Optimized HTML and CSS
  • Embedded CSS in HTML to reduce the critical path and the number of requests
  • Reduced the CNAME chain
  • Enabled the BunnyCDN Origin Shield (this probably has the greatest effect - especially for requests from the other side of the world)

With Fast or Slow my blog now reaches 100% in every category. Hopefully Google will soon notice that the site is now much faster.

No, my implementation (it’s still a WIP) doesn’t support sending “Update"s and “Delete"s yet. It’s one thing that bothers me about ActivityPub. Webmention is so much simpler in that regard. There also seems to be no way of forcing Mastodon to refetch an activity object other than sending an “Update” or “Delete” activity.

Just a small note: I deleted my Microblog.pub instance. I liked this piece of software and it’s a nice single-user alternative to Mastodon, but I don’t need a Fediverse instance anymore. My new fediverse strategy is to use my normal blog to post stuff (you can follow me via @en@jlelse.blog and @de@jlelse.blog) and Miniflux to follow people (Mastodon offers RSS user feeds).

If you reply to posts or mention my user handle in a public post on Mastodon, I will receive a notification and your reply will appear in the “Interaction” section under the post. If you interact with a post on your website and don’t automatically send Webmentions, you can also submit the URL in the form below each post.

By removing Microblog.pub from my server it also reduces the need for resources a lot. Python as well as MongoDB don’t seem to be that resource friendly. I currently use the cheapest VPS option from Hetzner and for the few remaining things hosted there (my website, my blog and some Go tools etc.), it’s more than enough.
