Jan-Lukas Elsejlelse's BlogOnce again I have coded a new small blog feature: statistics 📈 (English blog, German blog). I find it interesting to observe how the number of posts per year has changed over the years. Maybe I’ll add more detailed statistics with posts per month etc. soon.
Jan-Lukas ElseTwo years jlelse.blogTwo years ago today, I registered jlelse.blog and merged my different blogs into one. Since then, I definitely blog more and now use the blog instead of posting on siloed platforms as well. It has definitely paid off. And the domain is already renewed for another two years.Update: As asked in a comment, “paid off” in the sense that I enjoy blogging a lot and I really use the domain and not just bought it for fun. Of course, traffic has increased since then, but since I do not earn money w…
AnonymousA comment by Anonymouspaid off in what sense?. that you are blogging more often or that your traffic is higher?

It seems to be a day for blog anniversaries. Congratulations Jan-Lukas 🎉

Jan-Lukas ElseAdvanced BlogstatsThis evening I had a little fun with SQL and JavaScript. Now it is possible to see the number of posts without date in my blog statistics (en/de), but also the number of posts in each month of each year. By clicking on the year, the months are displayed. It would not have needed JavaScript in the frontend, would there be something like summary/details for tables. But at least it’s less than 1 KB of JavaScript.
Jan-Lukas ElseMy April '21 in ReviewAnd now another month is already over, a whole third of the year already. How time flies… And so I come to the review of the past month. On March 31st, my new employment contract started and with it a week and a half of vacation, which I spent mostly with my family and then with my girlfriend. Then on April 12th was my first real working day as a software developer. I already wrote about my experiences (🇩🇪) of the first week in a post.I still have a lot of fun at work. Even if I don’…
Jan-Lukas ElseTwo months of private diary bloggingMore than two months ago, I decided I should try using my blogging software for journaling. Every day, I create a new private post with a few bullet points about the day: what I did during the day, how I felt, what I thought about. On some days there are more points, on some days just a few short ones.I already tried journaling a few times, but always gave up after a few weeks. This time it seems to be more successful. I have already written 65 posts. Sometimes I write them in the evening, so…
MohamedA comment by MohamedThanks for reminding me. I never journaled to begin with.
Colin WalkerA comment by Colin WalkerI was in the same position, I'd tried journalling on paper but it never really worked out — I often forgot and the friction was high. Journalling apps have never really worked for me either as they were too impersonal and didn't give me what I wanted.
Having a simple means of posting that I have created has really helped, being able to write to the journal in exactly the same way as I write a blog post has been transformational. Knowing that it is on a system I have created helps me connect…
Jan-Lukas ElseOne year of private diary bloggingThis morning I wrote my 365th diary entry. With that, I now have my first full year of daily private diary blogging complete. A milestone! The statistics tell me that’s 32245 words with 186900 characters and an average word count of 88 words per post. A year and a few days ago, I had the spontaneous shower thought to try diary writing again. I have tried it several times, but always gave up after a short time. But since I now had my own blog software and regular blogging worked quite well, I …
GoBlogUpdates #1The last days I have worked on a few improvements for GoBlog:Viewing media files: there is now the option to see a list of uploaded files, view them with one click or delete them with two clicks. This works for local storage as well as for bunny.net and FTP. It also shows in how many posts the file name is referenced and how big the corresponding file is.WebMentions: I improved the verification of mentions with umlauts in URLs.Public HTTPS: autocert is used again instead of CertMagic, because…
Jan-Lukas ElseWriting as self-therapyMy blog has this feature to open a random post. One of over 900 on my English blog alone. I think I’ve mentioned before that I like to use this feature to browse a bit through my thoughts from a few years ago.Today I noticed something new in the process. I came across an article from October 2017. In it, I describe that yes, showing weakness is a strength. You can’t always just pretend that everything is fine, because everyone is having a bad time sometimes. And it’s ok to show that then.In O…
Kev Quirk@en I’m sorry for your loss. I lost my father when i was 23. He was 47, so i know just how you felt.I was in Afghanistan with the army when he took really ill, luckily they got me home in time to say goodbye. It’s shit.
Jan-Lukas Else@kev I'm sorry for your loss as well! I also hope your ok with those recent news from Afghanistan. 😕When he died we were just on our way back from vacations in Turkey, we came like 15 minutes too late. But that's life...

Jan-Lukas ElseMy September ‘21 in ReviewIt’s time again for a new monthly review. Let’s see what I was up to in September.Since I had a longer Internet outage last month, after my vacation I started to take measures so that I am no longer so limited in the future in case of a DSL outage. I booked an additional option (🇩🇪) with my Internet provider so that I can simply continue surfing via LTE in the event of a DSL outage. What’s more, this extra bandwidth can be used to make my Internet a bit faster. During a first DSL outage, whic…
Immerhin 314 e…
Jan-Lukas ElseJust noticed, but I have hit the 1000 posts mark on my English blog this month! 🎉
