Thoughts of an IT expert

💭 Thoughts: 2019-12

Welcome to the Thoughts section of my blog. Thoughts are better kept on my blog than on Twitter or other online platforms.

Do you still use RSS?

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

Of course I still use RSS. RSS offers me the possibility to consume news in the way I want. No algorithms that think they have to decide for me what interests me and what not. No algorithms that withhold news from me. Only the feeds I have subscribed to, all news from these feeds and no advertising between the news. I’m done when I’m done and don’t have to look at any more suggested articles. And I have the possibility to save articles for later reading. Miniflux is my favorite RSS reader. And I use the word RSS representatively for RSS, Atom and JSON Feed.

Most of my blog posts don’t have any images for a couple of reasons:

Self-hosting my blog and its services

Self-hosting my blog and the related services not only gives me the independence from third-party-services, it also gives me the option to customize things to my liking. In my opinion, this is even more important.

IndieWeb dream

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

My IndieWeb setup is continuing to evolve. I just added support for syndication (this post should appear on IndieNews) and JSON-posting to my Hugo backend and theme. Unfortunately, adding support for more IndieWeb features to this setup requires a lot of documentation reading, reverse engineering and looking at how other people have done that (of course in other programming languages, one has not much knowledge in).

My blog went viral and did just fine

Yesterday, I posted a link to a tweet by DHH on my blog. It’s about “Google tax”. Companies nowadays have to buy ads to appear on top for searches for their brand name.

I just noticed the following: Search on Twitter for IndieWeb and ActivityPub or take a look at the Google Trends for ActivityPub.

Mobile data

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

I have around 36 hours left until the current period of my mobile data plan expires. Each period takes 28 days and I have 2 GB of mobile data and endless calls and text messages available, for which I pay 7,99€. With the start of the next period I have 3 GB each 28 days.

Go and Java

Published on in 💭 Thoughts
Updated on

While I need to use Java for university projects (currently that are one Spring and one Java EE project) and work, I use Go on some personal projects (Hugo backend and KISSS). While I’m getting more familiar with Go (I do Java for many years), I also experience cases where I actually miss language features from Java. Oh and it’s not generics, I’m currently (still) fine without generics.

To fight my laziness and procrastination, I just unsubscribed from all YouTube channels and deactivated the app on my phone.

My problem with email logins

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

There are some online services that use email login. This means that instead of a combination of user name and password, only the email address is entered and a login link is sent to it. Basically, this is a good option to increase security a bit. The service only needs to store a list of email addresses instead of the corresponding password (hopefully encrypted and hashed) for each user.
