Bring your own WiFi

I’m currently with my family on vacations and we have rented a holiday flat. The description of the flat includes “Free WiFi”, so I would assume there is a functioning WiFi. It may not be fast, but it should be working.

But my experience with WiFis in hotels and holiday apartments (at least here in Germany) told me, to better take some precautions and bring my own WiFi repeater with me, which I could also use as an access point when there is access to LAN.

And it was a good idea. The existing WiFi is miserable. Not only is it one network for all holiday flats in this building (when I do a network scan with Fing, I can see all connected devices - so I should use my VPN all the time), but the wireless reception is bad and unreliable too. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

My own WiFi works a bit better. The speed is still really slow (I did a test and the download speed was just 5 MBit per second, I won’t even talk about the upload speed), but at least it’s more reliable.

All that wouldn’t be a problem if the German mobile phone contracts would have unlimited data for reasonable prices. But unlimited data is so expensive (80€ per month) and with my plan (a relative cheap one with a good price-service-ratio), I have just 2 GB every month.
