TIL about vendoring Hugo modules

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

Today, I learned that it’s possible to “vendor” Hugo modules. By vendoring Hugo modules, Hugo will add all required module files to your site directory and use them when building your site instead of trying to download them first. No need for me to use a module cache on Drone anymore and two seconds less build time. (But 3000 additional files in my blog repo.)

Music programming

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

It sometimes happens that I fall down a rabbit hole. Suddenly a subject catches my attention and excites me very much. The latest topic where this is the case is the software Sonic Pi and making music by code, basically “music programming”. I played the recorder for many years, but I do not have a real feeling for beat and rhythm. I like to listen to music, especially electronic music, but I couldn’t make music myself, I would miss the musical feeling.

Inspired by the posts of Kev Quirk and Jake Bauer, I did a Lighthouse test of my website. I wanted to see how good my blog is SEO wise. Some shortcomings were pointed out to me, for example I forgot to add rel="noopener" to external links with target="_blank" and in the mobile view some “tap targets” were too close together, so you could have clicked on the wrong one. I have addressed the problems and improved a few things in my theme. I don’t care that much about SEO, but somehow it’s nicer when Lighthouse confirms that you follow all the best practices, it’s the ambition. There are still a few things I could improve on, but I think then there is never an end.

Currently I use DuckDuckGo (DDG) as my default search engine, especially because I have the feeling that it is quiet fast. But DDG also has many features. For example, you can quickly and easily create a QR code by typing “qr code” + (what should be displayed as QR code).

I just upgraded my PC with a WiFi M.2 card with an Intel AX200 chipset (and two antennas), which supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5. No more adapters for Bluetooth! Now I’m just waiting for my “Microsoft Designer Bluetooth Desktop” mouse and keyboard and I have a few cables less on my desktop. 😄

Joining the Indieweb, the web that’s been here all along

This is a chicken-and-egg problem. Until enough websites are using Indieweb standards to publish content, it will remain a niche.

ActivityPub support for my blog?

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

I just found this article on how to create a basic ActivityPub server. It let’s me think about adding ActivityPub support to my hugo-micropub project (which then becomes more than just a Micropub endpoint for my Hugo setup). It’s definitely a project I finally want start once I’m done with this semester.
