Thoughts of an IT expert

Day 16 of Advent of Code is so confusing that I will not finish today’s puzzle. I wonder if yesterday was my last day with Advent of Code, or will the puzzles become more understandable and easier again in the next few days? Maybe I’m just more the practical type. I like programming, but such complex algorithms are not really my thing. And in the end, Advent of Code is supposed to be fun…

My neighbors always seem to be playing Forza Horizon 5 in the evenings the last few days, loud engine noises from the apartment below. 😂

“I’m worried about humanity’s future.”

Published on in 🔗 Links

Via Nicholas Danes I came across the video of Arun Maini (Mrwhosetheboss): “I’m worried about humanity’s future”. In this he addresses some good aspects. It’s about the impact of technology on our lives, society and behaviour. For example, he talks about the fact that algorithms are increasingly trying to keep us in front of the screen for as long as possible, that echo chambers are creating more and more negativity, and that we may soon no longer be able to distinguish between fiction and reality because of AI.

“An IndieWeb Recipe”

Published on in 💬 Micro

Mrs D wrote a fantastic poem about the IndieWeb:

A static site maker, for a place to begin.
A layout with markup (or just add it in!).
Host it on GitHub in public, for free
or fill up a bucket for a small monthly fee.
Webmention.io to make replies go,
Bridgy to POSSE to your old silo.
Mix with community for sugar and spice,
and enjoy owning your web paradise!

And there’s a nice article about the IndieWeb as well!

I configured Litestream for all my GoBlog-instances. This means that the changes to the SQLite databases, are replicated directly into an object storage at Scaleway. Why? An additional backup never hurts.

Yey, I’m not the only person who is happy to quit using Twitter. The Verge executive editor T.C. Sottek left Twitter as well.

I always find it interesting to learn how well-known services work under the hood and what efforts are being done behind the scenes to solve performance or other productive issues.

Medium and custom domains

Published on in 💬 Micro

After Medium had already announced last year that custom domains were to return, this is now finally the case. However, a membership is a prerequisite.

A good change in my opinion, even if I will no longer use this feature or Medium as a whole.

We hope custom domains help make your space on Medium feel like your own.

Remember: Even if it feels like it, it’s not your own!

However, it is now finally possible for me to separate the domain android.jlelse.eu from AndroidPub. I have set up BunnyCDN to redirect requests to the medium.com domain.

Maddy Mail Server

It’s already been a while, but I once (successfully) ran my own mail server for some time. I did this using the open source Mailcow project, which does all the configuration work for you and wraps everything nicely in Docker containers. There are also a few posts about it here on the blog.

LeechBlock

I am currently in the process of writing my bachelor thesis and my goal is to finish it as soon as possible. What I sometimes have problems with is distraction. If I don’t immediately enjoy a task, but have to overcome myself, then I get easily distracted. “Just check out something else for a minute…”
