BootBoi

Published on in 🔗 Links

I found this little open source app to wake up or even shut down my new code server using my smartphone: BootBoi. The whole thing even works via Tailscale, if I use a device from my home network as exit node. To wake up a Wake-on-LAN packet is sent and to shut down a SSH command is executed.

Yesterday I read this article by Vincent Warmerdam describing his new home setup. He uses an Intel NUC running Linux, which he can program on well, and accesses it via his laptop or a Mac using Visual Studio Code.

Unpopular opinion: SQL is awesome and I really like writing performant SELECT statements.

It would be a good thing of more services delete old unused accounts automatically, like Yahoo Mail does. I often come across accounts that I created years ago but haven’t touched for almost the same time. I am only reminded of them when these services change their TOS or privacy policies. Then I go and try to delete these accounts, sometimes without success, because it is impossible to delete the accounts themselves. Then I have to write a support request or send a mail to a contact address, which is not always successful as well.

Search personal websites

Published on in 🔗 Links

Michael Lewis had a pretty great idea, he created a search engine for personal websites. I really like that idea because I like exploring personal websites and especially reading personal blogs. It’s always interesting to read about people’s thoughts, hobbies, lives, experiences and point of views.

I watched “The Social Dilemma” on Netflix today. I like the movie! A good movie with a lot of things people from within my bubble probably already know. And a lot of reasons to stay away from (classic) social media.

Apple sucks 🙅‍♂️

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

I’m currently looking for a possible replacement to my Xiaomi Mi A1 (it’s showing signs of aging and has an annoying GPS bug). I’m evaluating previous-generation refurbished phones as well. While iPhones look great on the surface and aren’t really more expensive than premium phones from Samsung etc., I won’t buy an iPhone though. First, iOS is locked down so much, the only smartwatch you can use without problems is the Apple Watch and I won’t buy one to replace my Galaxy Watch. You also can’t install any apps Apple hasn’t approved. Second, the whole drama about in-app-purchases and Apple’s uncompetitive behavior is annoying as well. I won’t take an iPhone unless someone gives me one for free. Apple sucks! 🙅‍♂️
