Fun fact: Since I started tracking my train journeys in mid-May, I’ve already spent almost 7 whole days on trains. 🚄

I acquired a new, fancy domain for a new side project. A site with tips on how to save money on purchases is something I would like to start. The search for a CMS reminds me of why I built GoBlog: all available options are not optimal. But GoBlog also isn’t optimal for this project for various reasons, as it shouldn’t be a typical personal blog. And now I have this really cool domain and question my plans. 😅

In my second apartment, I really like sitting in the winter garden (more some kind of balcony or loggia but with windows) in the evening and looking outside. The neighbors aren’t very close, and you can see the sky well. It’s very relaxing to sit here in the dark, thinking and enjoying the time.

I’m still on vacation. It’s hot most days, but it’s interesting to get to know a new country and visit some places from my mother’s youth. I will write a more detailed report when I return. 😊

I just want to give a quick shout out to my online friend Žan. He’s been blogging for a long time (I still remember when we shared a gifted WordPress web host 8 (?) years ago 😄). Now he has shared some of his blogging insights and tips on his relatively new personal blog.

Chris Coyier wrote a post mentioning a Washington Post article that analyzed which websites Google used to train its AI model. And it seems that both my blog and my website (I think I should merge them one day) are used.

Google Bard is a bit too creative. In another chat, where I asked who “Jan-Lukas Else” is, it also said that I developed the “Quarkus programming language”. But this clearly shows the limitations of language models and the current state of AI. Just because the answers sound clever, they are not always right.

A screenshot showing Google’s AI Bard answering to a question about my websites. Some parts of the answer are right, but others are wrong.

Old content warning

Recently I implemented a setting in my blog software to disable the warning above posts older than one year. A setting that has its justification.

What a good feeling when the hours you have invested in optimizing and testing actually bear fruit. In other words, my blog now uses less than 100 MB of memory, even though I have quite a few features enabled. My diary for example needs less than 20 MB. And if you compare that with WordPress, where the database alone needs more than 300 MB… 😄

Today GoBlog got the option to configure your own map tile server. So not only standard OpenStreetMap is possible, but also Stamen Toner for example. Fits much better to my blog aesthetics, right? (See the map page.)

Yesterday and this morning I worked from the office rather than from home due to planned power interruptions. Impressions: My monitor at home is better, my chair is more comfortable and at home it is quieter (there is construction work in the office right now). Only the Internet is much faster in the office.
