Two years ago today, I registered jlelse.blog and merged my different blogs into one. Since then, I definitely blog more and now use the blog instead of posting on siloed platforms as well. It has definitely paid off. And the domain is already renewed for another two years.

After I had the spontaneous idea to just use my own blog software for diary writing, I added the functionality for a “private mode” this morning. In private mode a login is required on all pages.

Terence Eden has written memorably why it is important to write simple HTML. Especially for pages that might be important to some people.

I’ve only been using the MX Master 3 and the MX Keys from Logitech for a few days now, but I must say that my favorite feature of the MX Master 3 is definitely the “hyper-fast scrolling”. I don’t know how I got along with a mouse without this feature before. And also the MX Keys is a really awesome keyboard. The typing experience is so good! I definitely have to write a review in a week or two. And maybe try to get back into touch typing…

This is probably one of the coolest articles I have read in a long time. “Hunting the Nearly-Invisible Personal Website” is absolutely worth a read!

Next to my Microsoft Surface Go with Windows on it, I often take my Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga S1 with me, when I visit my family over the weekend. The ThinkPad let’s me do some development things on a Linux machine (with Ubuntu 20.04) during the long train trips (6 hours each direction). So I always try to get everything up-to-date before. It’s always amazing how fast it is to do this.

I just dropped a lot of feeds (mainly news) from my feed reader. I can’t scroll through about 900 new entries every day and then have 60 bookmarks that I spend all my time working through. Even though there are no algorithms that want to get me addicted to never ending timelines, I have to set limits.

Michael Lynch is someone who, when he has an idea or a problem, spares no effort to get to the bottom of it and develop a solution, usually with a combination of hardware and software. Recently he developed a project that allows him to remote control a server just by connecting a Raspberry Pi via USB and HDMI. The Pi runs a program with a web interface that forwards the keyboard input to the server via USB and sends the HDMI output back to the browser. This allows it to control the BIOS and even install a new operating system.

restic is my tool of choice to do backups. I’m just eagerly waiting for this a(a)wsome PR to get merged and a new version released! I’m backing up my Nextcloud (currently ~50 GB), but I never pruned the backup and now the backup is taking up more than 160 GB. That’s still just peanuts with Backblaze B2 as online storage, but I like to have things clean and tidy and a prune is overdue.

Tonight I spoke with my girlfriend on the phone and we talked for two hours about all kinds of topics. One topic was that I don’t think corona tracking apps, where the data is stored centrally, are a good idea because of privacy and stuff. My girlfriend, on the other hand, said why is privacy important at all? The argument that nobody needs to know what I do with whom, when, where and for how long was not convincing to her. She said that I track my runs via GPS anyway. And she asked who would be interested in your data if you are not famous or something?
